No longer cohabiting
Your ex-partner is entitled to part of the partner’s pension. Specifically the part that was insured during your cohabitation. We call this part the special partner’s pension. This pension will be paid out to your ex-partner after you pass away.
What must you do?
Deregister your partner with us. You can do so by sending us a message containing in any event the following details:
- The name, date of birth and citizen service number of your ex-partner.
- The date on which your cohabitation ended.
- If applicable: your ex-partner’s decision to waive the special partner’s pension. In that case, we require a statement bearing both your signatures. You can find this statement under Downloads.
We also require one of the following documents bearing the date on which your cohabitation ended:
- A notarial deed, or
- A private instrument bearing the signatures of you and your partner, or
- A statement signed by the both of you.
In all cases, your signatures must be certified by a civil-law notary.
What can your ex-partner do?
If your ex-partner wishes to remain entitled to the special partner’s pension, they don’t have to do anything. If they do not want a special partner’s pension, we require a statement bearing both your signatures. In that case, they will not receive a special partner’s pension after you pass away.
You have found a new partner with whom you plan to cohabit
In that case, there are two situations in which your ex-partner’s choice matters:
Situation 1:
Your ex-partner doesn’t want a special partner’s pension. In this situation, your new partner will receive a full partner’s pension after you pass away.
Situation 2:
Your ex-partner does want to receive a special partner’s pension. In this situation, your new partner will not receive as much partner’s pension compared to situation 1.
They will receive the partner’s pension minus your ex-partner’s special partner’s pension.
What will we do?
Following receipt of your deregistration and termination of the cohabitation with your ex-partner, we will send you and your ex-partner an overview of the special partner’s pension for your ex-partner.
