Passing away

Chances are that, in addition to your old-age pension, you are now also insured for partner’s pension and orphan’s pension. If you pass away, your partner and children will receive benefits. We will explain this below.

Partner’s pension for your partner

If you pass away, your partner will receive benefits under our pension scheme. Benefits will be provided by insurer Elipslife. You will see the insured amount in your personal pension portal.

What must you do?

You must indicate in a timely manner that you have a partner. Are you married in the Netherlands or have you entered into a registered partnership? In that case, we will be notified automatically by the municipality in which you live. You won’t have to do anything.

Are you married abroad or living abroad? Or are you cohabiting? If so, please register your partner with us yourself. This is easy to do via the pension portal.

Your ex-partner is entitled to special partner’s pension

Were you previously married or in a registered partnership? If so, your ex-partner is entitled to part of the partner’s pension. You can read how that works here.

Orphan’s pension for your children

As a parent, you want to take care of your children. Also if you pass away unexpectedly. Under the pension scheme, your children are entitled to an orphan’s pensions. Depending on your pension scheme, your children will receive orphan’s pensions until they are 18, 21, 25 or 27 years old. This also applies to stepchildren and foster children.

Your child or children will receive an orphan’s pension if they:

  • were born before your retirement date and,
  • depending on your pension scheme, they have not yet reached the age of 18, 21, 25 or 27.

If your child is a student, they may be entitled to more orphan’s pension. In such case, the child must be under the age of 27 and attend courses at least 20 hours per week.

What needs to be done?

If you pass away, we will automatically be notified through your municipality. Your surviving dependants won’t have to do anything for this. Except if you live abroad. In that case, we would like to receive a copy of the death certificate.
