Working fewer hours and taking leave

This may impact your pension and the accrual thereof. After all, you usually receive less salary if you work fewer hours. A smaller amount in pension contribution will then be paid, meaning you will also accrue less pension.

There are several situations in which you work fewer hours or take leave. We’ll list these for you below. It is helpful for certain situations to check how much pension you have accrued up to now. To check this, please log in to your personal pension portal.

You will accrue less old-age pension for yourself. And you will also accrue less partner’s pension for your partner and less orphan’s pension for your children.

What must you do?

Nothing. We will be notified of this change automatically through your employer.

In this case, you will remain employed by your employer. At the same time, you will retire partially. In this case, you will also work fewer hours. You will receive less salary and pay less pension contribution. This means that you will accrue less pension in this situation as well. The same applies to partner’s pension and orphan’s pension.

You remain employed by your employer, but temporarily do not perform any work. And you won’t receive a salary. This also means that you do not pay any pension contributions during this period. Your pension accrual stops for as long as you are on unpaid leave. If you resume work, you will receive salary and pay contribution pensions again.

What must you do?

Nothing. We will be notified of this automatically through your employer. Sometimes, it is possible to continue paying pension contributions during this leave anyway. Check with your employer to see if this is possible.

Are you taking leave and still receiving a salary? If so, your pension accrual will not be affected. During this leave, you will continue to pay pension contributions.

You will receive salary every month just like you’re used to. You continue to pay your pension contributions so your pension accrual continues as usual.

As a partner, you can take five consecutive weeks of post-birth leave. During these five weeks, you do not work or you work fewer hours. Employee Insurance Agency UWV pays 70% of your salary (up to a certain maximum) in that case. Thus, you will receive a lower salary during this period, meaning you will also accrue less pension.

What must you do?

Nothing. Your employer will report this to us. After this leave, we will be notified again by your employer.
